Jelena Kacar, R&D Engineer
I’ve been working at Appear since 2017 and I’m currently an R&D engineer.
What does a typical day look like for you?
For me, every working day is different, with its own unique set of challenges depending on the task I’m presented with. My typical day starts off with reviewing and analysing product system tests that are executed overnight. Based on these results, I work with the R&D team to digest this information and translate this into actionable outputs to continuously improve the current technologies we offer to our customers.
An important part of being an R&D engineer is constantly learning. Guided, of course, by the areas of interest of the business. Every day I’m deepening my understanding of a particular topic, or learning a new skill.
The R&D team is responsible for the design, software development, testing and documentation of several Appear products. My job is very product focused, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked across different levels of product development during my time at Appear.
What’s been the most exciting project you’ve worked on while at Appear and why?
That’s a difficult question to answer, as there’s quite a few that spring to mind.
However, I’d say the most exciting has been system testing. It’s given me a wider picture of the complexities and intricacies of the products we offer, as well as being able to work with the quality assurance team which has further deepened my testing knowledge. I’ve really appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the QA process and gained valuable experience from working with the team.
What’s been a career highlight for you during your time at Appear?
My whole role has been a highlight. Appear gives you the opportunity to get involved in different levels of product development and work with several teams across the organisation. The company really recognises and appreciates if you’re interested in a particular field, and gives you the flexibility to try new areas should you wish to change career path. I particularly enjoyed the agile development process, but do feel my career highlight is yet to come. My career is on an upwards trajectory here at Appear, and with that comes the opportunity to learn new skills and gain valuable experience.
On a personal level, I love to learn from other people’s work experiences and about their cultures. Appear’s multicultural and international team makes it a very special environment to be a part of.
What kind of colleague are you?
I would hope my colleagues and manager would agree with me when I say I’m supportive and helpful. I’m always open for discussion and ready to bounce ideas around.
Where would you like to see Appear five years from now?
The company is already in growth phase, so I’d like to see us continue this trajectory. With more growth in the market, this means hiring more employees too.
I’d also envision us continuing to deliver outstanding products and services to our existing customers, onboard new ones, provide our customers with our renowned support, and continue the journey of improving our products.
